Save your energy for the innocently ignorant, don’t waste it on the wilfully so.
Welcome everyone, to the Dream With Dan blog!!
I’m back again with another excerpt, taken from my guest appearance on the Unshakeable Being podcast, hosted by the charming, wise and always affable Dr. Heather Clark, ParmD.
This time we’re talking collective agreements and energy thieves. Now trigger warning: I do touch on the thorny issue of racism, but from a positive and potentially new perspective.
Now, we can not deny that there are things (rules, laws etc…) upon which we all agree (or at least, most of us do). Gravity, we need air to live, the sky is blue and so on. These things all have weight and demonstrable validity, because of how many of us believe in them.
Some collective agreements may not be as widely held, but they are held widely enough that they manifest physically. The recent racial tensions are an example of this.
I try, in my own life now, to not let other people waste my energy for me. I had a friend, who shall remain nameless, who made a racially charged joke at work recently. Rather than apologise, he doubled down and stood by his right to make said joke (which he of course has under the law, and that’s fine; but it doesn’t insulate him from social repercussions). He was summarily ‘cancelled’ by all of his colleagues and friends.
Now, ok they wanted to be at pains to point out that they did not associate with him, once that came to light. That’s understandable, but my feeling on all that is: you’re not going to change their mind, so don’t waste your energy. Just direct it somewhere creative and loving instead. You’ll stand a MUCH better chance of enacting change in others, by leading through example and you’ll be more fulfilled too!
Another way to look at it: save your energy for the innocently ignorant, don’t waste it on the wilfully so.
It’s not just true of aberrant, nasty attitudes like racism. If, as I say; reality reflects who we are, not what we do or say, then who we are has to be based on more than frivolous, vacuous or pernicious nonsense! If you just blow with the prevailing wind, how do you expect to be able to enact change?!
We have to be unshakable in the state of being that we want to see in our lives, otherwise we just reset to default, and what’s the point? We’ll just be swept along with the latest group dogma or fad.
Do you feel that your late diagnosis of Aspergers has shaped who you are?Dr. Heather
For a long time it did. I used to suffer with severe insomnia, and post my diagnosis I was able to understand that this was because I was struggling with extreme anxiety, personal and social, and I was living in a world that I didn’t understand.
When I was able to see what my gifts were, and implement them in my life, with all of those around me; the benefit way outweighs the cost. It still requires adjustment for some people some times, but I have all of the mechanisms in place and my team around me, to deal with it. The rest is just beautiful!
I hope this has clicked with you. If you enjoyed it, I produce regular Do It With Dan blogs, podcasts and videos. I have three books published now: Stepping Beyond Intention, The Dreamer’s Manifesto and From Time-to-Time (a really great book on time mastery). All of these are here to serve you and make you part of the journey as well.
