Why do people choose to be victims?
I just wanted to share this thought with you. It arose from a conversation that I had in a group that I’m a part of. We were discussing why people so often think of themselves as victims.
My take on it was that being a victim is the easy road. It is the path of least resistance (or so we think) to absolving ourselves of responsibility and hard work.
“OK” was the response “but what about people from whom being a victim is all they know?”
“Good point” I thought, one must have sympathy for those who have never known anything but victimhood. Regardless of that however, once someone becomes aware of the fact that they don’t have to be a victim; continuing to proclaim that they are one, becomes about something else.
Think about that. The mere moment that you posses the knowledge that victimhood is a personal choice, whoever and wherever you are; what you choose for yourself in that moment becomes either about preserving your victim status, or moving into a space of agency.
Now, the gap between those to places is often insanely vast and probably for obvious reasons right? It is seriously hard work unpicking your life’s story up until that moment and resetting the status quo. I get it.
Something I talk about in all of my books, classes and podcasts is the power of the subconscious. That it is running your creative power on autopilot 80-90% of the time! If all you have ever known (or rather: all you’ve ever been told and thus fed into your subconscious) is victimhood, then guess what? Your instinct is going to be to fight tooth and nail, in order to preserve that status!
Why? Cause you hate your self? NO! Because 80-90% of your creative power is dedicated to keeping you safe. Put another way: the operating parameters of your subconscious are so potently primeval. They are geared towards maintaining your safety and work on the basis that same = safe. Up until this point you haven’t died. Therefore whatever you’re doing must be working, and thus: must be preserved.
Your subconscious doesn’t give two figs about you needing a new car, wanting a nice holiday or desiring an abundant life. It resists these big changes out of hand, because they represent the unknown, risk and therefore: danger!
So this is where the work begins and any of you who are in my programs will know, that it isn’t a quick fix. It takes time, consistency and deliberate, conscious choices to change your story.
So really, the effective way to help people who are running on a lifetime’s worth of victimhood programming; is to encourage them to first identify and accept that they can choose not to be, and then to start taking baby steps towards a new narrative.
This is really what my Micro To Millions program is all about, in a nutshell. Small steps that reenforce at each level the belief structures in your subconscious, so that your story starts to change and eventually you are using that 80-90% creating abundance, calling in joy and purpose as part of your new status quo.
Now don’t get me wrong; we will most likely all have pockets of victimhood that linger around in there. Just like trying to rewrite an old hard drive, there is corrupted data that remains. I know it does for me. But if we have the support structures in place to deal with them and move forward expansively, they won’t have a hold on us anymore.
I promise you guys and gals, on the other side of this is a beautiful, amazing state of being. It absolutely IS worth the hard work and effort. The payoff from owning your life, taking responsibility for everything that has gone before and is to come, is absolutely f**cking epic!!
I hope this comes as a positive to you guys. It may not feel like it in the moment, if you have felt as though your are a victim your whole life, but I want you to recognise the beauty in reclaiming your power and moving forward as the creator of your own future!
My love to you all. Keep dreaming with your eyes open and have an amazing day!
