Walk up the friggin’ hill!
Hey everyone!
Welcome to another week/day/hour/minute/quanta of this thing we call life.
A lesson for you all today, learning the hard way, recently by yours truly.
I was walking the other day, as I like to do, when I came to the foot of a hill. Now bear in mind that I live in Mexico, it’s hot and that day it was particularly sweltering. I didn’t fancy the hill climb, so instead, thinking that I knew better; I began ‘taking a shortcut’.
Before I knew it, I was lost, stumbling around in the heat trying to find my way home. Eventually I regained my bearings, but had to accept that I was going to spend a lot longer walking in the heat, than I would have, had I just walked up the hill for five minutes!
The allegory is, I’m sure; not lost on any of you!
In life we get offered short cuts all the time! Ways out that provide short-term comfort (or seem to) and avoid the hard work. Your hill might be a person in your life, or a phone call you don’t want to have to make. You might need to spend some money to invest in your future. Whatever ‘hill’ you find yourself at the foot of; don’t look for shortcuts! Trust me…
Walk up the friggin’ hill!
Forget about the shortcuts guys, especially when they present themselves from a place of ignorance and a lack of experience. That ‘shortcut’ is just your misplaced idea of knowing better than the unknown.
In my case, it was a path that I decided to take in the mistaken belief that I knew better than to do the hard work. My trip wound up taking three times longer than it was going to, I wound up suffering more in the heat than I was going to, I got lost for a period of time which caused me more stress and I didn’t end up recording a video on the topic I had intended to discuss!
The other thing to bear in mind, when faced with a ‘hill’ of any kind is: this is an opportunity for growth! Who do you want to be: the person who stumbles around, looking for ways out? Or someone who recognises the value in short-term pain for long-term gain?
We can waste so much of our life avoiding things that before we know it: that’s all we are doing! Got something you’ve been putting off or avoiding? You know what to do.
That’s just my thought for today. I hope it has clicked with some of you. If you enjoyed it, I produce regular Do It With Dan blogs, podcasts and videos. I have three books published now: Stepping Beyond Intention, The Dreamer’s Manifesto and From Time-to-Time (a really great book on time mastery). All of these are here to serve you and make you part of the journey as well.
