Don’t get bogged down in pretentious BS!
Hello and welcome once again everyone to the Dream With Dan Blog. I wanted to use today’s post to tackle something that I see come up for a lot of people: overthinking things. More specifically: how to know when you’re overthinking things.
I think this is really the question that needs to be asked.
Now this topic came up from my regular guest spot on the LOA Today podcast. If you haven’t already: please check it out, head over to their site and show them some love.
We had a caller (also called Daniel, strangely enough…but let’s not overthink it) who had a recent revelation over how much he was living in a space of lack.
He’d known it about his approach to finances for some time. He had wanted to turn around his situation and that’s what had led him to play my Money Game.
In the course of following the lessons therein, he found himself suddenly aware of how he was showing up in the world, in relation to money. He was coming at it from a space of lack!
This is not uncommon, in fact it’s something that I encourage everyone to do (become aware of how they are showing up) but we can tip over into overthinking this, as we can with anything of course.
So awakened was Daniel to his energy of lack, as it pertained to all things, that he began noticing it in other areas of his life. He found that he had this attitude when it came to doing the dishes, the laundry and other household chores.
What he realised was that these all stemmed from a belief in him that he had a scarcity of time.
Yet another space of lack.
It then occurred to him that, by ‘purging’ (as he put it) and doing all of the chores; he would then be in a space of abundance (of clean pants and dishes) to be able to create abundance from.
Daniel’s not wrong – I want to stress this up front. If this works for him and sets his mind and energy up, from this point on, to create abundance in his finances, without being tethered to an energy of lack: marvellous.
He asked if he was overthinking things, by delving this deep. There is definitely a delicate balance between awareness and overthinking it. Knowing the difference can be tricky.
We are bombarded with programs, modalities, practices, guides, shamen, gurus etc… and the more we seek them, the more there are!
I’d of course be shooting myself in the foot if I said that you should avoid these. I think they’re vital to your success in many ways, but you need to maintain a conscious connection with which ones are serving you in your goals.
So…how to know when you’re overthinking things?
For me the real delineation between something being helpful, and something causing me to overthink is; is the thinking getting in the way of me taking action?
What Daniel could be in danger of, and again: I’m not saying that he’s wrong, is thinking so much about the minutia of being in lack – that he never executes anything.
I don’t think that’s the case in this instance, but I see it with SO many others. They subscribe to this and that practice/course/whatever, devoting all their time to studying it, meditating, visualising etc…
That’s fine, but where’s the action?
You see – if you’re engaging in these practices because you are very clear about the changes you want to see in your life, and you intend to use them to enact those changes: great!
If, however, you’re filling your time (and subsequently: your head) with bullsh*t, just so you can relinquish responsibility for the outcome: no bueno!
There’s a great attraction to some people, to busy themselves so much with the practice, that the practical application goes right out the window. Why? Because then it’s not their fault, right?
Think about it: it is very easy to just say – “but I’m doing all of the practices and classes…it’s not my fault if change doesn’t come” or “I don’t have time to take action, I’m far too busy spending time on my astral plane, connecting to the ghosts of Mars and riding my spirit animal to Valhalla”.
It’s just an excuse!
I talk a lot about action being a smaller part of the whole than preparedness, BUT that is so that when we come to execute our plan, it happens quickly and goes like clockwork!
You still have to execute the plan people!
Action may only be a small part of it, in terms of the time spent, but without it; nothing will happen.
So my message to those of you who may be worried about getting stuck in the planning phase, and want advice on how to know when you’re overthinking things:
Ask yourself – ‘Is the thinking stopping me from taking action?’
If it is; take a step back, reassess and look more closely at how you can better apply what you’re learning, with the ultimate aim of it better enhancing your action. How will this enable you to get your desired outcome more effectively? What are the practical measures by which I can apply these teachings, in the real world (not on frigging Mars) to my life, my loved ones and my goals?
If the answer is that you can’t; don’t overthink things – just drop it and move on to something that will!
