It’s OK to be Afraid

What is your fear telling you? Use it!

Hey Guys,

Dan Mangena here with another blog for you. Today we’re kicking off the week by talking about fear.

Specifically; the fear of change.

Let’s get clear on what we’re talking about though, really. When I say “the fear of change” what I’m really referring to is the discomfort that arrises from the pressure that we put ourselves under, when we have a change that we need to make in our lives.

This is a disempowering state because it is fundamentally a place of lack. It’s therefore not a state from which you are likely to be able to cultivate the outcome that you want, and pretty soon you’ll be compounding your feelings of discomfort and woe, with frustration and self-doubt.

The resulting ‘tail-spin’ just takes you further and further away from your intended outcome.

You’ve herd me talk a lot about Micro-Shifting before, but its merits bear repeating: making a consistent series of baby-steps, in the direction of a consciously chosen outcome, reduces resistance and increases our chances of getting there. In fact: it all but guarantees it.

There’s two important factors here though. Notice that I said “consciously chosen outcome”? This means that we have to do the leg work in truly discovering what we want to experience in our lives! Getting crystal clear!!

So many of us surrender to random outcomes generated by life and the cosmos, and in doing so: give up our power to create! We don’t have to do this, but it starts with identifying the outcomes that we want.

The other advantage of taking our journey in baby-steps is that with each one we encounter less/zero resistance, thus cementing in our subconscious the confidence to keep going and are therefore less likely to be subject to the snap back to our original state.

Think about it for a second: how many times have you committed to a program, diet or other lofty idea, with nothing but the end goal to aim at? How quickly did the doubt set in? How far did you get before a setback presented itself, and you wound up giving up because it just didn’t seem possible? That’s because you tried to make the jump in one go! Ok, maybe you understood that there were physical steps to go through, but mentally and emotionally you were trying to make the leap to ‘super successful, millionaire, unicorn, god king/queen’.

I had this with a chap (I won’t name names) who bought a place on one of my courses and expressed fear, because he had been going into debt in order to attend a bunch of programs that hadn’t been working for him! He’s not the only one. I’ve had a number of folks for whom I was not their first port of call, far from it. They’ve spread thousands on other programs and courses, without seeing any results. They came to me and I was able to offer them the last pieces of the puzzle, that clicked everything into place.

I’d love to take all the credit for that (no really, I would) but the fact is that they had been taking steps before that they weren’t ready for, and what I was offering; they were. There was an alignment with my teachings and where they were at.

What can be gleaned from this? Well as always; I encourage you to be honest with where you are, first and foremost. You can’t move forward (or in any direction) if you don’t know where you are first. Then look for the guide, program, teacher or coach that meets you where you are and gives you a step forward that you can actually stick to.

So many workshops will leave you feeling on a high, that dissipates as soon as you leave. Why? Because whatever they’re selling, legit or not; you weren’t ready to hear it. There was no alignment with their message and where you were at in the moment.

It may not be high-level coaching that you need, or an expensive workshop, or mentoring. A fifty-bucks pdf workbook might be all you need to get going in the right direction. Don’t fall into the trap of thinking that, just because you’re spending thousands, and the program you’re buying into has lots of wealthy people doing it; that it is right for you!

You’re optimal learning environment might not be with a one-to-one coach, it might be in a group, or learning from a workbook. Only you can answer that question, but you need to do so carefully, lovingly and from a clear understanding of where you’re at.

It all starts with you guys and gals!

Externalising the issue by buying blindly into another program, ain’t gonna get the baby bathed. Know yourself, accept everything you are right now, in this moment and then you’ll know much more what it is that you need, in order to move forward.

So, it’s absolutely ok to be afraid of change, so long as you understand it and use it as a way to inform yourself about where you’re at.

To summerise:

  1. Take honest stock of where you are right now
  2. Get to know the way that you learn, optimally
  3. Have a clear intention (you can use my Free Intention Setting Cheat Sheet to help you do that)
  4. Take an action that pushes you beyond your edge, but doesn’t push your buttons – then watch the magic happen!

That’s all for now, thank you so much for reading this blog, from the bottom of my heart! If you enjoyed it, I produce regular Do It With Dan blogs, podcasts and videos. I have three books published now: Stepping Beyond Intention, The Dreamer’s Manifesto and From Time-to-Time (a really great book on time mastery). All of these are here to serve you and make you part of the journey as well.
