Are you the true author of your story?

Hello everyone and thanks a million for taking the time to stop by my blog! While you might be on wind-down mode after a busy week, I’d like to hold your attention a while longer if I may; if you’re feeling a little lost, the following discussion may prove helpful! The theme of today’s blog is ‘stories’ and how you might go about re-writing your unconscious narrative. We could all talk for days about our own life journeys, and the events and experiences that got us to where we are today. While I encourage people not to dwell on what has been however, it’s these past narratives that can help us establish whether in fact we do hold dominion over our own unique voyages.
Could you be writing under a pseudonym?
So, what’s your story? As a transformational coach, you’ll find me asking this a lot! Yet while the intricate details are fascinating, I’m more intrigued to discover who this story truly belongs to.
To put it bluntly, if it’s not yours, I can’t help you. If your name’s not Dan, you’re not coming in – as they like to say in the UK! So ask yourself, could this be me? For example, do you always feel like you’re playing catch-up, or trying to meet the unrealistic expectations of others? Or do you ever feel like you’re a fly on the wall with no control over the events that play out before you? You may find yourself so disillusioned that you engage autopilot from Monday to Friday, without even realizing it. While we often put this down to stress, anxiety, lack of sleep (and all the usual culprits), have you ever stopped to wonder whether something (or someone) else is missing? Is it really you in there?
Hold your power
Re-writing your unconscious narrative starts by making a fundamental change, and that is to stop relinquishing your power! Those of us living false narratives find ourselves doing so due to reasons outside of ourselves. Most commonly, this includes the fact that we’ve allowed external forced to manipulate or dictate how we should be living our lives. And no, I’m not talking about some woo-woo, wizardy Voldemort nonsense – stay with me on this!
Whether it’s through cultural ideologies or it’s family/community-based, we give away so much of our power from the moment we’re born. As time goes by, these influences stack up so high that it often leaves little room for who we are as one-of-a-kind human beings. Right now in the US – from Hollywood to the political backdrop – the media continues to dictate how we should and shouldn’t live our lives. Whose workout should you be following, who should you vote for, who should you dress like? While these projections may seem harmless and taken with a ‘pinch of salt’, they are silently chipping away at each and every one of us on an unconscious level.

Re-writing your unconscious narrative
Ultimately, we are all – to a certain extent – allowing the narratives of others to guide us on our journey. Toxic media and political leaders aside, this includes the narratives of your loved ones (and maybe even your Granny Doris)! While every view is valid, that doesn’t mean that you should automatically follow in their footsteps. From my own experience, if I’d listened to my mum and gone to church, married the girl and become some high-flying investment banker, my life would be quite different now. Sure, it would have looked flashy from the outside, but it would it have truly been mine?
Instead, we should be making a stand. We should be speaking up and and speaking out when it comes to our true passions and what we really want from life. Once having decided on this, it is then within our power to bend our subconscious to our will in order to make those changes a reality. This is of course easier said than done, but re-writing your unconscious narrative starts with that realization – and what you plan to do next.
It’s all in the baby steps
You’ve made the choice to make a change, good on you. But if you’re feeling overwhelmed, hold it right there! More often than not, it’s the mere thought of the journey ahead that stops us from making tracks. So how can we hope to make real progress against a busy backdrop of ever-changing activity? You may want to explore the practice of micro-shifting. What do I mean by this exactly? Put simply, micro-shifting is about taking those all-important baby steps towards your end goal. It’s about completing the minimal deliverable, and moving in the direction of achieving an outcome that’s not met with opposition – whether from yourself or others.
As we start to gather momentum on this journey, we throw celebration into the mix; this then changes the emotional relationship we have with these steps, which frees us of any further resistance. Remember, the subconscious mind always wins! If you constantly find yourself diverted from the things you should be doing, then it’s because you unconsciously think that’s it not safe or right to be doing them. By making those micro-shifts and changing your relationship with those baby steps, you are introducing a new narrative that is entirely yours. Your mind is your friend, not your enemy! And if we provide it with the right program, chances are that the story will end the way we truly want it to.
